Social media platforms such as TikTok allow patients to exchange and share health information. In this study, we sought to understand how teenagers and young adults utilize TikTok to engage with acne and isotretinoin information. Analysis of the top 50 TikTok videos on an |981 Pediatric Dermatology BRIEF REPORT("worked," "saved"), negative anecdotes ("failed," "sucks"), and health care involvement ("doctor," "dermatologist").The most liked TikTok videos almost exclusively focused on improvement with isotretinoin with minimal discussion of side effects. Conversely, video comments noted increased interest in learning more about isotretinoin and associated side effects, discussions of personal anecdotes, and interest in discussing isotretinoin with health care providers. Although viewing isotretinoin TikTok videos may skew perceptions and expectations of isotretinoin efficacy and side effects, TikTok videos may also increase interest in exploring interventional acne treatment among young adults. Additionally, perceived widespread use and acceptance of isotretinoin on social media platforms like TikTok may also mitigate fear and uncertainty with patients discussing isotretinoin use with their health care providers. Trending content on social media platforms such as TikTok may aid dermatologists in understanding how patients receive and process medical information regarding treatments such as isotretinoin, though dermatologists must carefully temper expectations and correct any misunderstandings patients may have.
