The COVID-19 pandemic had a serious impact on global trade in 2020. The interruption of the supply chains due to various restrictions influenced the rapid drop in the transport demand. In the last decade, the global containerized trade has noted the growth of approximately 55,5%, with an average pace of growth of about 5% yearly. Container shipping, as one of the industries vulnerable to economic shocks, has noted a significant drop in trade. The role of maritime container terminals as an integrator and facilitator of global trade in the global supply chains is undisputed. Therefore, the role of services provided by the maritime container terminals has grown in importance. This situation generates the necessity to adapt to these circumstances in a way that expresses the need of improving the service quality, as one of the key aspects of competitiveness. The purpose of this paper is to determine the possibility to verify the relation between COVID-19 impacts on maritime container transport and maritime container terminal service quality. Based on the findings the suggested actions for service quality improvement are proposed.
Purpose:The study aims to determine and evaluate the mutual relation between price and selected factors of service quality of the maritime container terminal. Moreover, the forwarders' view of the change of the service quality and price level in the major polish container terminals during COVID-19 has been taken under consideration, as well as the forwarders' enterprises situation during the ongoing pandemic. Methodology: A few research methods were applied: literature review, questionnaire method, DEAMTEL, comparative analysis. Findings: Research revealed the relation between quickness of the service, security, and price aspects. The quickness of the service has been identified as an effect, while security and price factors have been identified as a cause. The ongoing pandemic caused a decrease in the quickness of the service and a slight increase in price in the examined maritime container terminals. Forwarders that took part in the study, have increased their market share through an increase in the number of orders. Practical implications:The results of the study could be considered as an interesting source of information for maritime container terminal operators and freight forwarders. Originality: This research is the first that attempted to determine the mutual relation between various factors of service quality and price at the maritime container terminal. Moreover, the study presents the change of the forwarders' situation during the
Motivation: Maritime container terminals play an important role in global as well as local supply chains. Especially, maritime container terminals can be perceived as essential transhipment points, which integrate other transport modes through a set of management (e.g. planning, controlling) and executive activities (e.g. reloading, handling). All these activities require the support of an adequate management system, focusing on continuous improvement of the maritime container economic efficiency. To meet this requirement an economic efficiency evaluation system is needed, which will be responsible for the assessment of maritime container terminals' activities, mainly according to such economic criteria as time and cost efficiency. In the literature some papers can be found, which are focused on the technical efficiency evaluation systems for the maritime container terminals based on parametrical methods. However, the literature does not cover the problem of proper economic efficiency evaluation system, designed for maritime container terminals. Aim: Based on the above mentioned reasons, the purpose of the article is to develop a system of economic efficiency evaluation for maritime container terminals. Results: Based on the research findings a conceptual model of economic efficiency evaluation system for the maritime container terminals is presented in the article.ORIGINAL ARTICLE
The concept of sustainable development is one of the few ideas that require the integration of all areas of human life on earth in order to maintain further development without major disruptions. One such area is maritime transport, including maritime container ports. Their unique feature is the ability to combine equivalent types of transport within the framework of a cargo-handling system with related information. In order to ensure a sustainable shipping flow through ports, it is necessary to integrate management knowledge with IT knowledge, so as to build a reference model of sustainable management of transshipment in maritime container ports. The literature has neglected this problem, thus motivating our contribution to this matter. As a result of the research work undertaken, a sustainable transshipment management system is first defined as a whole unit which develops its subsystems in a harmonious way without compromising them in the process. Then, the form of the reference model is given in detail. Therefore, we suggest that the system and its constituent elements constitute a method for sustainably managing the transshipment process.
The value of maritime freight transport grows yearly both in terms of value and quantity. The dynamic development of container shipping is responsible for this state of affairs. The maritime container transport market is strongly integrated on the supply side. The aim of this paper is to determine, based on empirical data, whether the market is still competitive for its participants on the supply side. For this purpose, the 2 indicators of concentration were calculated, namely CRx-concentration for 4 operators with the largest market share, and Herfindahl-Hirshmann Index for TOP 10 and TOP 20 operators, based on AXS Alphaliner TOP100 and various issues of UNCTAD Review of Maritime Transport. The results of the calculations indicate that the market is still competitive, although it is heading towards a direction in which several large entities will dictate the conditions to other participants.
