β-Diketiminato copper(I) complexes play important roles in bioinspired catalytic chemistry and in applications to the materials industry. However, it has been observed that these complexes are very susceptible to disproportionation. Coordinating solvents or Lewis bases are typically used to prevent disproportionation and to block the coordination sites of the copper(I) center from further decomposition. Here, we incorporate this coordination protection directly into the molecule in order to increase the stability and reactivity of these complexes and to discover new copper(I) binding motifs. Here we describe the synthesis, structural characterization, and reactivity of a series of unsymmetrical N-aryl-N'-alkylpyridyl β-diketiminato copper(I) complexes and discuss the structures and reactivity of these complexes with respect to the length of the pyridyl arm. All of the aforementioned unsymmetrical ß-diketiminato copper(I) complexes bind CO reversibly and are stable to disproportionation. The binding ability of CO and the rate of pyridyl ligand decoordination of these copper(I) complexes are directly related to the competition between the degree of puckering of the chelate system and the steric demands of the N-aryl substituent.
Emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization was employed to synthesize polystyrene (PS) microspheres, which were then self-assembled into an ordered periodic structure. A photochromic film was formed by adding polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) around the self-assembly of PS microspheres on a PDMS substrate. During polymerization, the PS microspheres shrunk depending on the amount of the hydrophilic comonomer, sodium 4-styrenesulfonate (NaSS). Variation in structural color was strongly affected by the size of the PS microspheres. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the surface and cross sections of the self-assembled microspheres. Results showed that the order and stacking thickness of microspheres were dependent on the drawing rate of the substrate and suspension concentration. High-transmittance photochromic films could be prepared when the drawing rate was lower than 1 μm/s and the suspension concentration was 20 wt %. PDMS surrounding the vacant space between regularly arranged PS microspheres could not only protect them but also increase the degree of matching between the refractive indices of PS and PDMS. The stability of the reflected structural color increased, and the optical transmittance of the photochromic film approached 95% after PDMS was poured between the PS microspheres. A special pattern could be designed and embedded inside the photochromic film. The PS/PDMS photochromic films can also be applied in decorative painting as well as in security devices, color-changing false nails, and privacy filters.
The evaluation of various ventilation strategies for optimal thermal comfort design in terms of predicted mean vote index was investigated. The major parameter is the inlet/outlet diffuser's locations in the occupied region. The location effects of the inlet and outlet diffusers at the ceiling/walls on thermal comfort were examined every 0 4 meter. Eight different air distribution systems including single inlet-single outlet and single inlet-double outlets arrangements were studied in an indoor environment. Also, an experimental validation was conducted. The comparison results between prediction and test are quite good.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
