We document here the threat of large scale destruction (collapse) of barrier islands based on the study of many cores taken along the Outer Banks and in Pamlico Sound, North Carolina.Around 1,100 cal yr BP, probably as the result of hurricane activity, portions of the southern Outer Banks must have collapsed to allow normal salinity waters to bathe southern Pamlico Sound for several hundred years. Such collapse could occur again during our current regime of global warming, rising sea level and increased tropical cyclone activity. The economic effect of barrier island break collapse on Outer Banks communities would be devastating.
Excavations at La Sufricaya, a minor ritual group in the outskirts of the Lowland Maya city of Holmul, have documented two mural paintings inside an elite building of Early Classic date (A.D. 300–A.D. 600). One of the paintings is mythological in nature (Mural 9). The second bears an inscription with references to calendrical and historical events. It commemorates a notorious arrival date at Tikal on 11 Eb 15 Mak (January 16, A.D. 378) on its first anniversary. The architecture and artifacts associated with the murals combine Maya and Teotihuacan decorative motifs, and offer several parallels with Tikal assemblages. The iconography, epigraphy, and archaeological associations of these murals are discussed in relation to the function of the palace complex. This important new evidence contributes to an understanding of which role relations with Teotihuacan may have played in regional politics in the Maya Lowlands during the Early Classic period from the point of view of a smaller site. The interpretations presented here focus on the concept of political intervention of Tikal in the affairs of secondary and tertiary sites.
This study examined the effect of diet and exercise on tumour growth, and the effect of dietary fatty acids on glucose uptake. Male Fischer 344 rats were divided into 4 dietary groups and fed for 2 weeks. The diets were 5% (wt/wt) safflower oil, 10% safflower oil, 5% docosahexaenoic acid(DHA)-rich, and 10% DHA-rich. On Day 14 the animals were injected with rat fibrosarcoma tumour cells. After 3 days of tumour growth the animals in each diet group were divided into exercise and nonexercise groups. Exercise was achieved by voluntary wheel running. Dietary intake, body weight, tumour growth, and distance run were determined daily. Two weeks later the animals were euthanized and the following tissues were dissected out: tumour, liver, heart, epididymal fat pads, gastrocnemius, epitrochlearis, and soleus muscles. Glucose transport experiments were performed on the epitrochlearis and soleus muscles whereas phospholipid analysis was completed on the gastrocnemius muscle. We observed no effect of either diet or exercise on tumour growth. The glucose transport data demonstrates that short-term voluntary running can cause increased insulin-sensitive transport and that DHA may inhibit transport. DHA-containing diets were associated with increased oxidation products TBARM. In conclusion, exercise benefits on glucose disposal are maintained in tumour-bearing animals but are influenced by fat content and composition. High DHA diets may also increase oxidative damage in muscle through enhanced TBARM production.
