Social identity theory and postcolonial theory are used to frame thematic findings about the impact of micro, meso and macro influences on identity development and belonging. The article concludes with discussion of the importance of analysing the impact of colonisation and broader societal discourse in social work practice when working within the adoption sector.
This article looks at the relationship between the women's movement in Quebec and the emergence of new norms of sex equality since 1970. In Quebec, there is seemingly no equivalent for the intense focussing on the development of a constitutional right to equality and on strategic litigation by English-Canadian feminists. Several factors may explain the different paths taken to redefine women's rights in Quebec. Among these factors are a different legal intellectual tradition and the social reforms of the 1970's. Quebec feminist leaders are often professionally linked to the public sector and effect major changes through the powers of persuasion rather than those of confrontation. The creation of the Quebec Charter in 1976 and the difficulties which beset its initial application may have encouraged certain reservations about the possible benefits of constitutional litigation. Political controversy surrounding the Canadian Charter reinforces the tendency to favour legislative and institutional reform. Finally, the French tradition of public debate and democratic action replaces, to some extent, the Anglo-American tradition of test-case litigation as a means of influencing the evolution of the law. The article concludes by noting that women's rights in Quebec have deep and durable roots which have developed independently from the exercise of judicial power
