Poor oral hygiene practices and inadequate attention to oral health during pregnancy leads to gingiva and periodontal problems, and have adverse effect in the featus development and have postnatal effects. Available literature suggests that the research is deficit in assessing knowledge and practices related to oral hygine measures and needs and safe period for dental treatment during pregnancy. Materials and Methods: This study was cross sectional survey. A total of 100 pregnant women were selected by convenience sampling technique. A questionnaire containing 10 questions in English was explained and thus procured data was filled by the dental professional for obtaining baseline information.Result: Most pregnant women need more information about oral health and ways for prevention of occurrence of gingival and periodontal diseases. Present study subjects had reported more bleeding gums compared with other study populations. Conclusion:The overall results suggests that the knowledge and practice of oral health care need to be improved irrespective of literacy rate.
This case describes a 47 years old Obese post menopausal lady with sudden onset flaccid quadriparesis with sparing of posterior column sensation .She has a prior history of Diabetes mellitus ,systemic hypertension ,Dyslipidemia , and hypothyroidism on regular .She was admitted for 1 day history of fever and malaise, laboratory parameters suggestive of a Possible a viral ethnology .She developed sudden onset of weakness, initially started on her Lower limb and progressing to her upper limb within few hours along with bladder involvement which appeared on the next day of hospitalisation prompt thinking of a demyelination like pattern after ruling out mechanical causes with a radiograph .In the background of a fever prompted thinking of a fast progressing demyelination like a GBS/ADEM and even started IVIG as there is always some time delay for MRI to arrive. The MRI report suggested of Thrombosis of ASA territory involving the anterior paramedian aspect of Medulla extending up to the upper cervical cord. She remained quadriplegic thereafter and 6 months later despite receiving antiplatelets, Physiotherapy and other supportive treatments. The case described here elaborates the clinical presentation and outcome of ASA thrombosis. ASA thrombosis though rare is be thought as a differential of acute onset flaccid quadriparesis in an acute setting .The clinical course and devastating nature of illness should be aware off. Its necessary to diagnose this syndrome in the earliest when patient presents with acute onset of motor weakness sparing the posterior column sensation
Cerebrovascular accident plays an important role in the morbidity and mortality of adults posing serious medical, socio-economic and rehabilitation problems. Electrocardiographic abnormalities have been known to occur in the context of neurological disease. The current study is an observational study aimed at elucidating the relation between cerebrovascular accident and ECG. Objectives: To determine the frequency of ECG changes in cerebrovascular accident and to determine the variations in ECG manifestations and mortality in different types of stroke. Materials and Methods: 100 patients of acute stroke were considered. ECG was recorded in these patients within 24 hours of admission. Follow up of admitted patients was done to know the prognosis. Results: ECG abnormalities noted among cerebral ischemic patients were presence of T Wave inversion (34.48%) and ST segment depression (32.76%) followed by QTc Prolongation (29.31%) and presence of U waves (27.59%). In cases of haemorrhagic Stroke, T wave inversion (33.33%) and arrhythmias (33.33%) were followed by U waves (30.95%) and ST segment depression (23.81%). Mortality was higher in patients with ST-T changes in ischemic group (66.66%) and in patients with positive U waves (60%) in haemorrhagic group. Studying ECG changes will provide insight in prognosis and management of stroke patients and may alter their management in coming future. Conclusion: ECG changes occurred very commonly in acute stroke. The changes are thought to be independent of the nature of stroke. It was noted that ST and T inversion being common in ischemic while T inversions and arrhythmias common in haemorrhagic CVA. It was also noted that the mortality was higher in patients with abnormal ECG following an acute Cerebrovascular event.
Early diagnosis of temperomandibular disorders (TMD) is important for prevention of further damage to the parts of the oro-facial system as early symptoms can be used as predictors of TMD. Aim: To assess the frequency of symptoms of temperomandibular disorders among dental students in Ernakulam district, Kerala, using Fonseca questionnaire. Settings and Design: A cross sectional study was conducted among dental students of various dental colleges in Ernakulam district. A convenience sampling method was used. Materials and Methods: The participants were provided with questionnaire of Fonseca, which included ten questions, which could be answered with yes, no and sometimes. Statistical analysis used: The collected data was analyzed statistically using SPSS version 24. Descriptive statistics and chi square tests were used for the analysis. Results: Among the 793 students who took part in the study (112 males and 681 females) 59.3% of the students had TMD according to the Fonseca index and among them almost 36% had mild TMD, 17.7% moderate TMD and only 5.8 % had severe TMD. The results also revealed that the sex of the individual did not significantly influence the severity of TMD (p value>0.05) whereas the influence of the age was found to be significant. Conclusions: The prevalence of TMD was found to be higher in dental students. Further research involving large diverse populations may throw light on the prevalence and severity of TMD, which may pave ways for developing specific preventive and therapeutic protocols in managing TMD at an early stage.
