Published information with respect to the mating behavior pattern of the adult male guinea pig is less than that for the male albino rat. Elements or measures composing the mating behavior pattern were described by Avery (3) and Louttit (13). Sollenberger and Hamilton ( 16) and Seward (15) made use of such measures in scoring changes following castration and replacement therapy with androgens. There were, however, for the investigator interested in the use of the guinea pig, certain lacunae. These were (a) recognition of complete copulation, that is, intromission with ejaculation, (b) information concerning the pattern of behavior during the pre-ejaculatory interval, (c) the length of the pre-ejaculatory interval, (d) the range and nature of individual variation, and (e) a method of scoring which takes into account differences in the length of the pre-ejaculatory interval. The latter lacuna has not yet been filled for the rat (11).
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
