This paper argues that the ubiquitous digital networks in which we are increasingly becoming immersed present a threat to our ability to exercise free will. Using process philosophy, and expanding upon understandings of causal autonomy, the paper outlines a thematic analysis of diary studies and interviews gathered in a project exploring the nature of digital experience. It concludes that without mindfulness in both the use and design of digital devices and services we run the risk of allowing such services to direct our daily lives in ways over which we are increasingly losing control.
IntroductionA key part of the response to the mpox (monkeypox) epidemic has been the vaccination campaign targeted at gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM), including people living with HIV (PLWH).MethodsWe undertook a single-site, retrospective analysis of individuals who received a single dose of modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA-BN) prior to the onset of mpox symptoms. Demographics, clinical characteristics and patient management were analysed.ResultsOf 10 068 individuals who received a first dose of the MVA-BN vaccination, 15 (0.15%) developed mpox subsequently. All individuals identified were GBM with 12/15 (80%) on Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and 3/15 (20%) PLWH. Median time from MVA-BN inoculum to mpox symptoms was 4 days (IQR 3–9), systemic symptoms and supportive medical treatment required were common (11/15 patients, 73%) and all had localising skin lesions. One individual required hospitalisation.ConclusionsAlthough clinical presentation was similar to unvaccinated cohorts, we observed low numbers of mpox cases following a first dose of MVA-BN vaccination. Larger, multicentric studies are needed to further evaluate vaccination failure and immunity duration.
The JBBA has an outstandingly streamlined submissions process, the reviewers comments have been constructive and valuable, and it is outstandingly well produced, presented and promulgated. It is in my opinion the leading journal for blockchain research and I expect it to maintain that distinction under the direction of its forward-looking leadership team.
The quality of online content can be an important aspect in determining the success of a freecontent website. Whilst there have been many industry best practices focusing on improving accessibility and usability, there is little literature on comparing content quality to aid practitioners in deciding authoring approaches. This study forms part of a larger body of PhD research provide a framework to aid practitioner user-centred design technique selection.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
