Purpose: To raise awareness of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, a disorder that causes anemic hemolysis, in young athletes.Methods: Data collection via interview, research analysis, and clinical application.Results: An 18-year-old male high school basketball player experienced recurring symptoms of fatigue, dizziness, and syncope during times of oxidative stress. Testing resulted in a diagnosis of G6PDD deficiency.
Conclusions:With accurate diagnosis, individuals with G6PDD may participate in activity with modifications.
