We retrospectively studied 19 cases of nasal NK/T-cell lymphoma for various potential prognostic factors and performed real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) viral load in tumor tissue. Patients with a low EBV viral load (<1 copy per cell) more frequently survived for more than 2 years compared with patients with a high EBV viral load (>/=1 copies/cell) (7/7 vs 3/9; P = .014; Fisher exact test). Furthermore, the patients with low EBV viral loads had a better overall survival than patients with high viral loads (50% accumulative survival: not reached vs 4-5 months; Kaplan-Meier survival analysis; P = .049). In contrast, the overall survival of the patients did not correlate with the extent of lesion, age, stage, necrosis, histologic subtypes, CD56 expression, or angiocentric or angiodestructive growth pattern. Our findings suggest that the EBV viral load in tumor tissues is a useful indicator for predicting outcome of nasal NK/T-cell lymphoma.
Recent studies have reported that SERPINE2 contributes to the development of various cancers. However, its association with urothelial carcinoma (UC) remains unclear. In this study, data on urinary bladder UC (UBUC) cases from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database were used to investigate the prognostic value of SERPINE2 mRNA expression. Then, SERPINE2 expression was analyzed with tissue microarrays constructed from 117 upper tract UC (UTUC) and 84 UBUC tissue specimens using immunohistochemical staining. Results were compared to clinicopathologic data by multivariate analysis. In the TCGA database, high SERPINE2 mRNA expression indicated a poor prognosis in patients with UBUC. Furthermore, Mann–Whitney U test showed that high SERPINE2 immunoexpression was significantly associated with adverse pathologic parameters including invasion, high grade, coexistence of UC in situ, and advanced pT stage (all p < 0.05, except for a marginal association with high-grade UBUC, p = 0.066). Kaplan–Meier analysis revealed that high SERPINE2 expression was associated with worse overall survival (OS; UTUC, p = 0.003; UBUC, p = 0.014) and disease-free survival (UTUC, p = 0.031; UBUC, p = 0.033). Moreover, multivariate analysis identified high SERPINE2 expression as an independent prognostic factor for OS (UTUC, p = 0.002; UBUC, p = 0.024). Taken together, our findings demonstrated that increased SERPINE2 expression is associated with adverse pathologic features and may serve as a prognostic biomarker for UC.
Paraneoplastic dermatosis is defined as both benign skin lesions and internal malignancy existing at the same time with parallel clinical courses. Herein, we report a 91-year-old male who presented as pityriasis lichenoids chronica (PLC) concomitantly with a primary splenic diffuse large B cell lymphoma. Surgical removal of the spleen cleared his skin lesions dramatically. However, seven months later, the splenic lymphoma relapsed in concordance with the recurrence of the skin lesions of PLC. To our knowledge, he is the first case that PLC is the leading presentation and paraneoplastic manifestation of primary splenic large B-cell lymphoma.
