a b s t r a c tWe calculated the cross correlations between the half-hourly times series of the ten Dow Jones US economic sectors over the period and also over 11 segments within the present financial crisis, to construct minimal spanning trees (MSTs) of the US economy at the sector level. In all MSTs, a core-fringe structure is found, with consumer goods, consumer services, and the industrials consistently making up the core, and basic materials, oil & gas, healthcare, telecommunications, and utilities residing predominantly on the fringe. More importantly, we find that the MSTs can be classified into two distinct, statistically robust, topologies: (i) star-like, with the industrials at the center, associated with low-volatility economic growth; and (ii) chain-like, associated with high-volatility economic crisis. Finally, we present statistical evidence, based on the emergence of a starlike MST in Sep 2009, and the MST staying robustly star-like throughout the Greek Debt Crisis, that the US economy is on track to a recovery.
A self-starting passively mode-locked fiber laser with a carbon nanotube-based saturable absorber and a fiber-based bandpass filter (BPF) is proposed. Incorporation of a BPF into the cavity leads to a great reduction of its timing jitter from 84.8 to 29.1 fs (10 Hz-3 MHz). This happens because the filtering effect can weaken the fluctuation of the central wavelength induced by the quantum noise, being one of the important contributions to timing jitter in the optical amplifying process.
The frequency response of the noise conversion from the relative intensity noise (RIN) to the phase noise in the photodetection process of an optical pulse train is characterized with pump modulation method. It is found that the conversion ratio from the RIN to the phase noise is not sensitive to the noise power or the incident optical power, but decreases approximately as with the increase of noise frequency. A new parameter defined as the RF power difference of the noise spurious peaks is proposed and is shown to provide an easy way to estimate the strength of the RIN-to-phase-noise conversion avoiding the need to measure the exact noise spectra of the RIN and the phase noise.Index Terms-Intensity noise, mode-locked laser, phase noise, photodetector and pump modulation.
Pump relative intensity noise (RIN) has been recognized as a major source of noise in mode-locked lasers. The coupling of RIN from the pump to the output of a passively mode-locked fiber laser (PMFL) is systematically investigated using a pump modulation technique. It is found that the linear RIN coupling ratio from pump to PMFL is decreased with an increase in modulation frequency and is independent of modulation power. Moreover, the nonlinear RIN coupling from pump to PMFL is clearly demonstrated with a square wave modulated pump. The nonlinear RIN coupling ratio is noise power dependent. An exponential decay model based on the view of gain modulation is proposed and explains well the behavior of the nonlinear coupling phenomena.
We present an all-fiber bidirectional passively mode-locked soliton laser with what we believe is a novel cavity configuration. Using a four-port circulator, we incorporate two different semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) into the laser cavity, which enables bidirectional mode locking. The laser allows the generation of two independent countercirculating mode-locked pulse trains, each with an individual fundamental repetition rate that can be adjusted by varying the SESAM pigtail length. Two countercirculating pulse trains with repetition rates of 21.3 and 15.2 MHz are obtained simultaneously. By controlling the intracavity loss imposed on these two pulse trains, either one of the two pulse trains can be switched on or off. The bidirectional operation with other repetition rates is also demonstrated.
