A fundamental question facing electrodes made out of few layers of graphene (FLG) is if they display chemical properties that are different to their bulk graphite counterpart. Here, we show evidence that suggests that lithium ion intercalation on FLG, as measured via stationary voltammetry, shows a strong dependence on the number of layers of graphene that compose the electrode. Despite its extreme thinness and turbostratic structure, Li ion intercalation into FLG still proceeds through a staging process, albeit with different signatures than bulk graphite or multilayer graphene. Single-layer graphene does not show any evidence of ion intercalation, while FLG with four graphene layers displays limited staging peaks, which broaden and increase in number as the layer number increases to six. Despite these mechanistic differences on ion intercalation, the formation of a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) was observed on all electrodes. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) in the feedback mode was used to demonstrate changes in the surface conductivity of FLG during SEI evolution. Observation of ion intercalation on large area FLG was conditioned to the fabrication of "ionic channels" on the electrode. SECM measurements using a recently developed Li-ion sensitive imaging technique evidenced the role of these channels in enabling Li-ion intercalation through localized flux measurements. This work highlights the impact of nanostructure and microstructure on macroscopic electrochemical behavior and provides guidance to the mechanistic control of ion intercalation using graphene, an atomically thin interface where surface and bulk reactivity converge.
Abstract:With the global trend of population aging, how to integrate the health needs of elderly people into public open space (POS) development while taking into account public interest is a major challenge in the 21st century. Although the issues of elderly people's health and their POS needs are receiving increasing attention, research on continuous improvement strategies for POS for healthy aging societies is still limited. Hence, this study explored continuous improvement strategies thoroughly and systematically by using the DANP-V model. The findings revealed cognitive differences between expert and elderly groups. Moreover, water features, waste management, and co-maintenance spaces were the three criteria with the largest gap value. POS improvement has previously been implemented based on a priority order ranked from the criterion with largest gap value to the criterion with the smallest one. However, an alternative approach based on the cause-effect relationship is proposed in this paper. The study findings have both theoretical and practical implications for POS planners and designers.
Background: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a class of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) broadly expressed in cells of various species. However, the molecular mechanisms that link circRNAs with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) are not well understood. In the present study, we attempted to provide novel basis for targeted therapy for LSCC from the aspect of circRNA–microRNA (miRNA)–mRNA interaction.
Methods: We investigated the expression of circRNAs in three paired LSCC tissues and adjacent non-tumor tissues by microarray analysis. Differentially expressed circRNAs were identified between LSCC tissues and non-cancerous matched tissues, including 527 up-regulated circRNAs and 414 down-regulated circRNAs. We focused on hsa_circ_0059354, which is located on chromosome 20 and derived from RASSF2, and thus we named it circRASSF2.
Results: circRASSF2 was found to be significantly up-regulated in LSCC tissues and LSCC cell lines compared with paired adjacent non-tumorous tissues and normal cells. Moreover, knockdown of circRASSF2 significantly inhibited cell proliferation and migration in vitro, which was blocked by miR-302b-3p inhibitor. Bioinformatics analysis predicted that there is a circRASSF2/miR-302b-3p/ insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R) axis in LSCC progression. Dual-luciferase reporter system validated the direct interaction of circRASSF2, miR-302b-3p, and IGF-1R. Western blot verified that inhibition of circRASSF2 decreased IGF-1R expression. Furthermore, silencing circRASSF2 suppressed LSCC growth in vivo. Importantly, we demonstrated that circRASSF2 was up-regulated in serum exosomes from LSCC patients. Altogether, silencing circRASSF2 suppresses progression of LSCC by interacting with miR-302b-3p and decreasing inhibiting IGF-1R expression.
Conclusion: In conclusion, these data suggest that circRASSF2 is a central component linking circRNAs to progression of LSCC via an miR-302b-3p/IGF-1R axis.
