The celebration of Empire Day in Britain was of greater significance than previous research has suggested. This article disproves the misconception that the festival was restricted in the main to a constituency of schoolchildren. The celebrations had a far wider effect on diverse communities; in many cases the ritual celebration of the British Empire traversed class boundaries and helped to sustain traditional social hierarchies. In the immediate aftermath of the First World War, when unrestrained jingoism became inappropriate, Empire Day retained its hegemonic potency by amalgamating the emerging traditions of sombre commemoration into the repertoire of imperial festivity. Empire Day, although remaining popular during the interwar period, became an arena of passionate contestation. The Conservative party and other groups adopted Empire Day as a vehicle for anti-socialist propaganda, whilst the communist party exploited it as an opportunity to attack British imperialism. Other protests came from local Labour groups and pacifist dissenters. The overt politicization of Empire Day severely disrupted its hegemonic function and the political battles fought over the form and purpose of the celebrations made it difficult to uphold the notion that the festival was merely a benign tribute to a legitimate and natural state of affairs.
\s=b\The goal of a facial plastic surgeon should be to correct the undesirable conditions for which he has been consulted and to avoid leaving his mark on the patient. By embracing the concept that prevention is better than cure, it is generally possible to avoid the "operated-on look" following cosmetic surgery. We describe a number of safeguards we use to preserve natural-looking eyes following lower lid blepharoplasty in men and women. The most common, permanent complication described following conventional lower lid blepharoplasty is the round eye. The condition is readily identified by an increase in scleral show between the limbus and lower lash margin. Closer evaluation will reveal infero\x=req-\ medial displacement of the lateral commissure, increased slope of the lateral third of each eyelid, a flattened, unanimated, pretarsal component, and an unnatural infralash crease produced by the healed incisional scar. These findings are one step short of ectropion; therefore, the methods herein described should help reduce the incidence of this more dreaded and serious complication of blepharoplasty.(Arch Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg
This is a case series of 2 female patients with long-standing histories of decreased sexual function and pelvic organ prolapse who underwent augmentation of the anterior vaginal wall using autologous fat grafting, in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures. Fat augmentation of the anterior vaginal wall with its enhanced permanence could be a safe and long-lasting alternative to improve female sexual function in this group.
The differential diagnosis of a mass presenting in the lateral aspect of the orbit with bony erosion and involving the skin includes many malignancies, predominantly sarcomas. A total evaluation of the mass to include histopathologic characteristics and the true extent of the disease is critical to proper management of the patient. A 68-year-old man was referred for therapy with a diagnosis of fibrosarcoma. Evaluation of the disease revealed contiguous tumor from the right temporal region into the posterior orbit, with displacement of the globe and extension intracranially. During operation a frozen section analysis of the tumor was also interpreted as fibrosarcoma. A craniofacial resection was performed, including orbital exenteration and resection of a large 10 X 12 cm segment of attached dura. There was no evidence of extension into the brain. Final pathologic evaluation of the tumor was meningioma rather than fibrosarcoma. This unusual presentation of a meningioma has never been reported in the medical literature. The difficulty with interpretation of the original biopsies will be discussed, as well as the management of this case
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
