Reclaimed water is an important water resource for the state of Florida. This paper reports on the nutrient levels in the reclaimed water plants generated through a single event survey of fifty (50) plants and on potential organic markers for the nutrients. The size of the plants surveyed range from 0.4 to 57.5 MGD. Samples were collected and assayed for inorganic and organic nitrogen species, ortho-and total phosphate, and other pertinent water quality parameters. Based on all samples collected, the median total nitrogen was 6.5 mg/L, ranging from 0.13 to 29 mg/L. Total phosphorus concentrations ranged from 0.02 to 16 mg/L with a median concentration of 1.3 mg/L. Finally, the ammonia concentration ranged from 0.01 to 29 mg/L (median 0.06 mg/L). Organic and inorganic microoconstituents, such as sucralose and gadolinium, have the potential to be employed as conservative markers for nutrients. However, further study needs to be conducted to verify their application.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
