Czech hop cultivars were evaluated from 2010 to 2019. A total of 13 cultivars were assessed. The highest yield per plant was found out in cv. Kazbek (3.66 kg/plant), whereas the lowest in cv. Saazer (2.02 kg/plant). Rubín and Boomerang are the cultivars with the lowest variability of the yield per plant. On the contrary, the highest variability was shown by cv. Kazbek. Conclusively the highest content of alpha acids was recorded in cv. Gaia (13.81%), whereas Saazer is the cultivar with the lowest content (2.87%). Significantly highest content of beta acids were recorded in cvs. Gaia, Vital, Boomerang and Bohemie. On the contrary, the lowest content of beta acids was found in cvs. Saazer, Rubín and Bor (below 4%). Kazbek is the cultivar with the highest ratio of cohumulone (36.67% rel.). Cvs. Premiant and Harmonie show the lowest ratio of cohumulone (19.63% rel.). The lowest ratio of myrcene (18.91% rel.) and caryophyllene (8.26% rel.) was recorded in cv. Saazer. The highest ratio of farnesene was found in cv. Saazer (13.34% rel.) and cv. Saaz Late (10.22% rel.). A wide range was found in the ratio of humulene: from 2.15% rel. (cv. Vital) to 35.76% rel. (cv. Bor). Cv. Gaia has the highest ratio of selinene (19.77% rel.).
Hop breeding in the Czech Republic develops a number of flavour hops. The Kazbek hop variety was registered in 2008 and the Mimosa variety in 2019. The best 7 hop genotypes were selected from breeding materials between the years 2014 and 2019. Kazbek, 5512 (Ceres) and 5571 (Eris) expressed a clear citrusy flavour. Mimosa, 5495 (Juno) and 5520 (Saturn) could be described as fruity while 5164 (Uran), 5540 (Jupiter) and 5580 (Pluto) as rather spicy. Genotype 5164 showed the highest aroma intensity, content of alpha acids (11.51% w/w) and alpha/beta ratio (2.20). Whereas Mimosa demonstrated the highest content of beta acids (5.56% w/w) and the lowest alpha/beta ratio (0.28), 5571 and 5520 had the highest cohumulone amount (49.19% rel. and 47.35% rel., respectively). In contrast, 5580 were distinguished by the lowest cohumulone (21.28% rel.). The highest amount of hop oils was determined in 5164 (1.77 w/w) and 5520 (1.53 w/w). 5164, 5540 and 5495 show a myrcene level above 40% rel. On the other hand, Kazbek, Mimosa and 5571 indicated a myrcene content below 35%. The highest level of farnesene (12.50% rel.) was detected in 5164; in other samples the values were below 1% rel. Mimosa showed the highest concentration of selinenes (32.75% rel.); other samples demonstrated selinenes below 10% rel. The Kazbek variety is the foundation for the breeding of flavour hops in the Czech Republic, and therefore it is the mother plant of genotypes 5495, 5512, 5520, 5540 and 5571. Harmonie is the mother plant of genotype 5580.
Czech hop varieties are evaluated as part of maintenance breeding. Every year, this evaluation includes ten mother plants of each hop variety. Yield is determined in kilograms of fresh hops per plant. The t-test is used to determine significance. Results from the years 2014–2019 show that Gaia and Kazbek have the highest yield (3.17 kg/plant and 3.05 kg/plant, respectively). Their yield is higher than that of the Harmonie, Agnus, Bohemie, Premiant, Sládek, Boomerang and Saaz varieties. Saaz has the lowest hop yield, i.e. 1.85 kg/plant. Bor, Saaz Late, Saaz and Sládek show the lowest variability, which ranges between 20.56 and 20.58%. Gaia has the highest variability (34.33%). Gaia also has the highest alpha acid content (12.30%) with a probability of 95% to 99%. Vital and Boomerang have a higher alpha acid content than other Czech hop varieties (11.09% and 10.81%, respectively) with a probability of 99%. Saaz Late (3.42%) and Saaz (3.06%) have the lowest alpha acid content with a probability of 95% to 99%. The variability of alpha acid content is considerably lower than the hop yield variability. Rubín has the lowest year-on-year variability of all Czech varieties (4.81%). Vital and Gaia have a very low variability (5.63% and 5.72%, respectively). A higher variability of alpha acid content was found in Saaz Late, Premiant, Agnus, Saaz, Kazbek, Bor and Harmonie, ranging between 8.01% and 10.21%.
The aim of this study was to compare yield and technological parameters of Czech historical hop clones, which were grown in our current climatic conditions. The highest yields from the selected original hop clones were found in “Úštěcký smetaňák” (1.93 t/ha), “Dubský zeleňák” (1.80 t/ha) and “Hřebčí chmel” (1.51 t/ha), which is probably caused by a genetic difference from Saazer hop. On the contrary, a low yield of hops was recorded in “Mastýřovický” (0.50 t/ha). In terms of brewing parameters, the highest contents of valuable alpha acids were detected in Osvald’s clones no. 147 a/I (3.88% w/w), no. 86 (3.71% w/w) together with no. 114 (3.45% w/w), while the lowest level (1.05% w/w) was found in “Hřebčí chmel” and “Úštěcký smetaňák”. The highest contents of essential oils were measured in Osvald’s clone no. 147 a/I (0.77% w/w), “Žatecká populace” (0.68% w/w) and Osvald’s clone no. 126 (0.65% w/w). Vice versa, the clones “Mastýřovický” (0.35% w/w), “Hřebčí chmel” (0.35% w/w) and “Tršický” (0.31% w/w.) exhibited the lowest contents. The evaluated hops displayed a relatively balanced composition of essential oils with the exception of “Dubský zeleňák”, which has an extremely low ratio of farnesene (4.35% rel.), but also a high ratio of selinene (8.95% rel.). Osvald’s clone no. 124b and 126 is genetically identical with the variety of Fuggle. The results show that clones “Hřebčí chmel”, “Úštěcký smetaňák” and “Dubský zeleňák” are different from other clones.
