On the basis of these observations, it would appear fruitful to explore the mechanism of a defensive delusional system under therapeutic stress. That is, it is suggested that further research could be conducted t o explore more objectively the hypothesis that more personal types of material increase stress and consequent use of delusions as a defense mechanism. SUMMARYFive therapists attempted t o reduce the verbalized delusional content in a hospitalized psychotic patient. Contrary t o previous findings the punishing of delusional and the rewarding of non-delusional responses did not result in a consistent decrement in delusional content. The results suggested alternate methods of reducing delusional material. Hypotheses were presented for future research.
