This essay aims to uncover the key factors for the emergence of new political parties in the decade of 2010, in Portugal. For that we considered two axes of research: the systemic axis,to ascertain the political, social and economic context; and the particularistic axis, to determine its ideological mark, ideational purpose and valences of its founders and leaders. The results point to three major conclusions: i) the crisis did not present itself as a great mobilizer for the creation of new parties; ii) the Geringonça accentuated the left vs. right divide; and iii) the opposition tends to generate new rupturing and purifying parties.
