Baxter, Jr., I was struck by the familiarity of the material. Almost all of it occurred in the qualitative analysis course, now largely discontinued: Use of hydrated ion formulas when writing correct equations for the reactions, insoluble hydroxides, amphiprotism, tendency of some salts to hydrolyze in solution, coordination numbers for complex ions, etc. Some general chemistry labs contain a few experiments on the cation scheme. If laboratory time for the complete course can no longer be provided, I suggest that the study of the scheme in
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
