D URING the past quarter century, the growth of activity toward the improvement of the public health has been unprecedented. Although this has occurred throughout the world, necessarily the degree, direction, and method have been subject to considerable variation. On the one hand are a number of usually older and economically more fortunate nations which have moved in the main stream of recent history and social development. These liave experienced a continuous improvement in their standards of living, a most important characteristic of which has been the evolution of adequate medical care and sound public health activities resultinig in a longer and healthier life.
