Abstrnct-Communities of Practice provide a means for individuals and organizations to support both learning and performance by its members. This paper identifies factors that are critical to the success of Communities of Practice, particularly as contrasted with Virtnnl Communities and Knowledge Networks A model is proposed to structure further discnssion and research about how Commnnities of Practice may grow and thrive over time. Discussion of ihe model leads to the presentation of a number of candidate topics for fnrther research.
