The techniques and systems described in this paper clearly establish the advantages of a well designed telemetering and remote control system for the proper and safe operation of any pipeline or petroleum processing plant to enable the dispatcher or plant operator at a central control office to be informed of the operating condition of the equipment at the various pump, process or compressor stations along the pipe line or at the plant. This concentration of information data, enables a check and record of delivery schedules, efficiency of station opera tion, product losses, fail-safe conditions, alarm conditions and other pertinent general data. Digital or tone type telemetering provide an efficient and economical media for such systems.
ABSTRACTThe telemetering and remote control systems described and analyzed in this paper are relative to the supervision, control and telemetering of variables as used in the operation of unattended petroleum production, processing and transport facilities. The systems will control and supply data on such variables as pressures, flow rates, flow levels, temperatures and densities. The facilities are equipped with all neces sary shutdown and warning devices essential to their safe operation. These devices provide complete remote supervision at all times. Ab normal conditions are transmitted to the control station, and indicated on various types of an nunciator alarm panels. Supervisory control equipment, including indicators and function switches are provided at the control station. Facilities are provided for remotely adjusting various mechanical and electrical functions, either in steps or proportional movement. The intelligence to be transmitted over the communications media are divided into three parts; (l) supervisory, control and digitally teleme tered data; (2) continuously telemetered data; and (3) aural data. All alarms, remote control commands and analog values are converted to bina ry digits. The continuous data is converted to a 0-10 millivolt DC signal at the remote station and is recorded on a chart recorder at the master station. The aural portion is supplied by acousti cal transducers at desired remote stations. The digital telemetered data, transmitted to the master station, is displayed on an auto matic logging typewriter.A multitude of prime factors are involved when designing remote-control and telemetering equipment for this application; namely, relia bility, hazardous conditions, high ambients and other environmental factors.
