Objectives : To investigate the hepatoprotective effect of Gardeniae Fructus (Ga) and Glycine semen preparatum (Gl) aqueous extract against D-galactosamine (D-GalN, 300㎎/㎏ body weight) was administered to the male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. Materials and Methods : The study was carried out on male SD rats (age matched, weight 250±10 g). Experimental groups (Exp) divided four : Normal group (Nor) was administered saline, Control (Con) group was only received D-GalN (300 ㎎/㎏) intraperitoneally. Exp was orally administered Ga (200 mg/kg; Ga group), Gl (700 mg/kg; Gl group), and Chizadochi-Tang (200 mg/kg+700 mg/kg, GG group) after D-GalN treatment during 14 days (n=6). Results : D-GalN administration induced hepatotoxicity in rats which was manifested by increased levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) but decreased total cholesterol (HDL C) and triglyceride (TG). The serum TG concentrations were significantly increased ( # p<0.05) in the Ga group compared with Con. AST and ALP activities were significantly decreased ( # p<0.05) in the all experimental groups compared with Con. ALT activities were significantly decreased ( # p<0.05) in the Ga group compared with Con. LDH activities were significantly decreased ( # p<0.05) in the GG group compared with Con. On the light microscopic study, a number of vacuole were observed in the Con, but decreased in experimental groups. Conclusion : Ga aqueous extract and Chizadochi-Tang extract possesses hepatoprotective potential, thus validating its use in alleviating toxic effects of D-GalN.
Objectives :This study was designed to investigate the effects of Gastrodia elata Blume on the improvement of memory. Methods :This study was a 12 week, double blind, comparative clinical study. There were eligible who worked with a group of healthy seniors, all 60 years of age or older. 50 subjects were randomized either to Gastrodia elata Blume in powder form and steep in hot water or placebo. We measured the faculty of memory by using K-DRS, MMSE-K, Digit Span, Letter Fluency Test, Word List Memory Test, and the Trail Making Test, and after 12 weeks we measured the faculty of memory again using the same methods. Results :Gastrodia elata Blume steeps in the hot water group significantly increased. Initiation, perseveration level, and Memory level of K-DRS and MMSE-K score. There were no considerable differences between three groups in Digit Span and Trail Making Test score. Gastrodia elata Blume group showed significant advances in Letter Fluency Test and recognition of Word List Memory Test. Conclusions :The results suggest that Gastrodia elata Blume may have positive effects on memory improvement and function of the frontal lobe activation.
Objectives : The study was aimed to analyze the correlation between Herbology and contemporary research results, KCD-codes and terms. The study will present information that can be used to find the direction of further researches and be applied to the education of Herbology. Methods : Papers were searched in OASIS and PubMed. Papers were then categorized as "medicine and pharmacy articles" or "articles unrelated to medicine and pharmacy." Medicine or pharmacy articles about Gastrodiae Rhizoma were matched with treatments in Herbology and KCD-codes. Medicine and pharmacy articles which did not research Gastrodiae Rhizoma mainly and articles unrelated to medicine and pharmacy were categorized and analyzed. KCD-codes and terms were arranged by treatments in Herbology. Research types, the number of papers, and the citation count were arranged by each treatment in Herbology. Degrees of Herbology research were represented as a table and a graph. Results : There were 148 Medicine and pharmacy articles about Gastrodiae Rhizoma, 76 medicine and pharmacy articles which did not studied Gastrodiae Rhizoma mainly, and 120 articles unrelated to medicine and pharmacy. Researches on Senility and hypertensive diseases were conducted to the degree of clinical research. Numbness of the limbs scored 617, Epilepsy and convulsions scored 257. Conclusions : The study suggests that there were 148 medicine and pharmacy articles about Gastrodiae Rhizoma. Epilepsy and convulsions were the most researched treatment in Herbology. Of the medicine and pharmacy articles tha t did not match treatments in Herbology, there were clinical research articles researching on senility which can be used in the Herbology education field.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Polygonum tinctoria Niram(PTN) on atopic dermatitis(AD) in hairless mice induced by 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene(DNCB).Method : They were divided into four group, Nor, Con, 1X and 5X, for evaluating the change of appearance of skin surface, skin hydration, thickness of epidermis and mast cell numbers during 30 days.Results : PTN suppressed symptoms of AD in appearance of skin and increased skin hydration for 1X and 5X. In histopathological examination, 1X and 5X significantly reduced the thickness of epidermis and number of mast cell in dermis. These results suggested that the PTN improved the AD-like symptoms of hairless Mice.
