Despu�s de haber encontrado en varios archivos los nombres de los pueblos de indios que exist�an en la Nueva Espa�a en 1800, se decidi� elaborar mapas para desplegar la ubicaci�n de los 4,468 pueblos, seg�n su latitud, longitud y altitud. Este art�culo explica la manera de elaborar los mapas, utilizando programas del Instituto Nacional de Estad�stica, Geograf�a e Inform�tica (INEGI) de M�xico. Se revisan el proceso y los problemas encontrados en el proyecto, as� como la cartograf�a que se desarroll� para el Atlas ilustrado de los pueblos de indios de la Nueva Espa�a, 1800. Alter having discovered in various archives the names of the pueblos de indios which existed in New Spain in 1800, it was judged important to project on maps the location of each of these 4,468 towns, according to their latitude, longitude and altitude. This article explains the manner in which the maps were made, using programs from Mexico's National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Informatics (INEGI).The process and problems encountered in the project are discussed, as well as the cartography developed for the Atlas ilustrado de los pueblos de indios de la Nueva Espa�a, 1800.
