The view on antimicrobials has dramatically changed due to the increased knowledge on the importance of microbiota composition in different body parts. Antimicrobials can no longer be considered only beneficial, but also potentially deleterious for favourable bacterial populations. Still, the use of metaphylactic antimicrobial treatment at early stages of life is a practice in use in porcine production. Many reports have shown that antibiotics can critically affect the gut microbiota, however the effect of perinatal antimicrobial treatment on the nasal microbiota has not been explored yet. To gain insights on the potential changes in nasal microbial composition due to antimicrobial treatments, piglets from two different farms were sampled at weaning. The nasal microbiota was analysed when antimicrobial treatment was used early in life, and later, when no antimicrobial treatment was used during the lactation period. Removal of perinatal antimicrobials resulted in an increased bacterial diversity in nasal microbiota at weaning. Concurrently, elimination of antimicrobials produced an increase in the relative abundance of
Prevotella
and
Lactobacillus
, and a decrease in
Moraxella
and
Bergeyella
. These changes in microbiota composition were accompanied by an improvement of the piglets’ health and a higher productivity in the nursery phase.
The brazilian poultry industry is one of the most developed in the world, however, with significant growth and scientific progress, studies are needed on accommodation and techniques for creating ambience of birds. An aviary should ensure a comfortable environment for poultry, ensuring high productivity. In this context, seeking to overcome the variations of ambience, it has adopted the construction of Dark-House aviaries with curtains and solid wall, which provide a greater environmental control and improved performance of the broiler chickens. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the performance of broiler chickens created in conventional, Dark-House with curtain and solid wall aviaries. Six created broilers were accompanied on 5 conventional aviaries, 5 Dark-House with curtain and 5 solid wall Dark-House. The line and feeding management did not differ between the created. Were collected data weight gain, slaughter weight, age at slaughter, feed conversion and mortality. The data
The requirements of lactating sows for total lysine and metabolyzable energy (ME) to support subsequent reproduction performance were evaluated. One hundred and twenty sows were used. The treatments were constituted of eight diets (factorial arrangement of four levels of total lysine: 0.75, 0.90, 1.05 and 1.20%, and two levels of ME: 3,250 and 3,400 kcal ME/kg). There was interaction between lysine and ME on the plasma urea nitrogen (PUN), with linear decrease effect on level of 3,250 kcal ME/kg, and quadratic effect on level of 3,400 kcal ME/kg, with the lowest level of PUN with 1.06% lysine. The reproductive performance in the subsequent farrowing was not affected by the lysine levels and ME, hence, neither the total born nor the born alive differed among the treatments. There was no convincing information to support that the requirements of total lysine and ME for lactating sows were higher than 0. 75% and 3,250 kcal/kg.
Reproductive biotechnologies are emerging as an important element for livestock; however, some strategies must be modified to adapt to different breeding systems, such as the use of follicular synchronization protocols. This study aimed to evaluate follicular synchronization using estradiol benzoate (EB), in the presence of the corpus luteum (CL) from Wagyu oocyte donors in in vitro embryo production (IVEP). Rounds of IVEP were performed in heifers and cows (n=19) that were classified into three groups: G1/CL - animals with CL, G2/WCL - animals without CL, and G3/CL + EB - animals with CL that were subjected to follicular synchronization with EB at D0. The groups G1/CL and G2/WCL were considered the control and undertook the natural process of follicular dynamics. The results showed that the synchronization of the follicular wave with the application of EB in the presence of CL, presented a smaller number of small (6.05 ± 0.55) and large follicles (0.45 ± 0.15), but increased (P < 0.05) the number of medium-sized follicles (16.20 ± 0.90). However, the results of ovum pick up showed that regardless of whether or not EB was applied, and regardless of the presence or absence of CL in the Wagyu donor, there was no difference among the groups (P > 0.05) concerning the number of viable oocytes and the viability rate. It was concluded that follicular synchronization using EB in Wagyu oocyte donors that presented a CL, increased the number of medium-sized follicles. However, there was no improvement in the efficiency of ovum pick up, in vitro embryo production, and pregnancy rate.
