A survey of online news people rated the quality of online news. Top rankings went to content criteria, such as credibility and utility, suggesting that many traditional journalism values remain paramount.
Lithium Ion batteries have now become the workhorse energy storage device for the satellite industry and are flying on a large number of earth orbiting satellites and planetary probes. While Li-Ion batteries have many advantages over more traditional technologies, they need to be carefully managed with regards to charge and discharge, as the cells are sensitive to overcharge and overdischarge and depending on the length of the mission, the nominal voltage of each cell within the battery pack can diverge from the manufacturer's recommended voltage. Aeroflex has developed a line of Lithium Ion cell balancing and protection electronics that is suitable for missions in any earth orbit (GEO, LEO, MEO & HEO) as well as interplanetary probes. These units are complimentary to the Li-Ion battery pack and work with batteries from any of the leading manufacturers. Currently the Aeroflex Lithium Ion battery cell balancing electronic units are flying on three spacecraft. More units are in manufacturing and are slated to be launched in the near future. Additionally, a set of cell voltage monitoring and over voltage protection units is scheduled to be launched on the Commercial Orbit Transportation System in the near future. This paper briefly summarizes the development history of this product line, highlights the design features, documents the flight experience, and describes the on-going ground test efforts. Nomenclature BEU = battery electronics unit BIE = battery interface electronics COTS = commercial orbital transportation system EM = engineering model EQM = engineering qualification model GEO = geosynchronous earth orbit HEO = high earth orbit LEO = low earth orbit Li-Ion = lithium ion MEO = medium earth orbit OCP = overcharge protection OSC = Orbital Sciences Corporation OVP = overvoltage protection PLL = phase lock loop
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
