Ultrastructural features of a typical carotid body tumor revealed the close resemblance of this neoplasm to the normal carotid body. This included duplication of the basic structural unit of this organ, as well as the presence of tumor cells homologous to the normal Type I and II cells. A dual population of neurosecretory‐type granules was observed, which could be seen to be at least partially assembled within the Golgi apparatus. Finally, fine structural similarities to the alveolar soft‐part sarcoma were noted, supporting the previously suggested related histogentsis of these tumors.
