The agri-food sector is in constantly renewing, continuously demanding new systems that facilitate farmers´ work. Efficient agricultural practices are essential to increasing farm profitability, and reducing water consumption can be achieved by real-time monitoring of water needs. However, the prices of automatic systems for collecting data from several sources (soil and climate) are expensive and their autonomy is very low. This paper presents a low-consumption solution using the Internet of Things (IoT) based on wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and long-range wide-area network (LoRaWAN) technologies. By means of low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) communication, a farmer can monitor the state of crops in real time thanks to a large number of sensors connected wirelessly and distributed across the farm. The wireless sensor node developed, called BoXmote, exhibits very low power, since it has been optimized both in terms of hardware and software. The result is a higher degree of autonomy than commercial motes. This will allow the farmer to have access to all of the information necessary to achieve an efficient irrigation management of his crops with full autonomy.
New players are entering the new and important digital data market for agriculture, increasing power asymmetries and reinforcing their competitive advantages. Although the farmer remains at the heart of agricultural data collection, to date, only a few farmers participate in data platforms. Despite this, more and more decision support systems (DSSs) tools are used in agriculture, and digital platforms as data aggregators could be useful technologies for helping farmers make better decisions. However, as these systems develop, the efficiency of these platforms becomes more challenging (sharing, ownership, governance, and transparency). In this paper, we conduct a case study for an accessible and scalable digital data platform that is focused on adding value to smallholders. The case study research is based on meta-governance theory and multidimensional multilayered digital platform architecture, to determine platform governance and a data development model for the Andalusian (Spain) fruit and vegetable sector. With the information obtained from the agents of this sector, a digital platform called farmdata was designed, which connects to several regional and national, and public and private databases, aggregating data and providing tools for decision making. Results from the interviews reflect the farmer’s interests in participating in a centralized cloud data platform, preferably one that is managed by a university, but also with attention being paid toward security and transparency, as well as providing added value. As for future directions, we propose further research on how the benefits should be distributed among end users, as well as for the study of a distributed model through blockchain.
Blockchain se ha convertido en una tecnología disruptiva que tiene la capacidad de transformar la industria agroalimentaria, puesto que promete resolver muchos problemas relacionados con la falta de confianza en la trazabilidad y el producto que adquieren los consumidores. Sin embargo, las partes implicadas en la cadena de suministro de productos agroalimentarios son numerosas y están físicamente dispersas, lo que dificulta el manejo de datos e información. Como resultado, el proceso de producción no es transparente y la confianza es difícil de construir.Para ser más exitosas en la economía globalizada actual, las cooperativas deben focalizarse en ofrecer mayor transparencia. Este documento propone un sistema de trazabilidad para una cooperativa agrícola basado en la tecnología blockchain, para resolver la crisis de confianza en la cadena de suministro de los productos agroalimentarios. La aplicación de técnicas de blockchain a la trazabilidad del producto agrario no solo amplía el dominio de la aplicación de la tecnología blockchain, sino que también apoya la generación de confianza entre los diferentes agentes de la cadena. Se exploran las posibles implicaciones del blockchain para los alimentos frescos mediante el desarrollo de una prueba de concepto (PoC) en el ámbito de la trazabilidad agroalimentaria, incorporando, además, la tecnología de los contratos inteligentes. Los hallazgos de la investigación contribuyen a una mejor comprensión de la tecnología blockchain para las diversas partes interesadas en la cadena de alimentos frescos, especialmente para las cooperativas, siendo una oportunidad para la mejora de la reputación y competitividad en una economía altamente globalizada.
Data are currently characterized as the world’s most valuable resource and agriculture is responding to this global trend. The challenge in that particular field of study is to create a Digital Agriculture that help the agri-food sector grow in a fair, competitive environment. As automated machine learning techniques and big data are global research trends in agronomy, this paper aims at comparing different marketing techniques based on Content Analysis to determine the feasibility of using Twitter to design marketing strategies and to determine which techniques are more effective, in particular, for the strawberry industry. A total of 2249 hashtags were subjected to Content Analysis using the Word-count technique, Grounded Theory Method (GTM), and Network Analysis (NA). Findings confirm the results of previous studies regarding Twitter’s potential as a useful source of information due to its lower execution and analysis costs. In general, NA is more effective, cheaper, and faster for Content Analysis than that based both on GTM and automated Word-count. This paper reveals the potential of strawberry-related Twitter data for conducting berry consumer studies, useful in increasing the competitiveness of the berry sector and filling an important gap in the literature by providing guidance on the challenge of data science in agronomy.
