To determine which of 4 types of living quarters best facilitates formation of friendships, questionnaires asking for lists of friends and ratings of these on an intimacy scale were given to 211 subjects from 4 types of dormitories which differed in potential for interaction. The more interaction encouraged by the dormitory structure, the greater the number of codormers recorded on a list of friends. The level of intimacy of these friends was not related to interaction.
