Finland is one of the latest independent states of Europe. The expression «land without history» illustrates well certain Finnish sentiments for the past of their country which was dominated from the 13th century onwards right to 1917 by foreign forces, first by Sweden, then by the Russian empire. The emergence of a sense of identity and nationality was a slow and complex process in which the question of language played an important role.
