This article has two main goals. First of all, it seeks to describe and critically analyze the functioning of the Chilean Supreme Court's Judicial Prosecutor in its role as prison inspector. The second goal is to identify the main problems of the prison system in Chile, based on a sample of more than three-hundred written records of its prison visits. To achieve the first goal, we analyze the extent at which the Judicial Prosecutor -both as an institution and in the way it conducts the prison visits-satisfies the demands as determined by the International Law of human rights. To accomplish the second goal, we identify and systematize the problems regarding prison conditions raised by the National Institute of Human Rights, discussing whether the extent at which the findings match the standards established by the InterAmerican Court of Human Rights.
