The results on their own are not definitive, but the promising findings should stimulate further research to clarify the potential benefits of micronutrient supplements.
A case-control study of lung cancer in underground tin miners in southern China was conducted to examine the interplay between exposure to radon progeny and tobacco use. A total of 460 incident cases and 1,043 controls were evaluated. Among the exposed, mean radon progeny exposures were 600 and 427 working level months (WLM) for cases and controls, respectively. The excess relative risk per WLM (ERR/WLM) was 0.28% overall, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.1-0.6%, similar to the estimate from a cohort study in a related population of underground miners. The established patterns of lung cancer associated with radon were seen; the ERR/WLM decreased with attained age and time since last exposure. Conditional on total exposure, risk was highest for exposures delivered at a low rate. The ERR/WLM did not differ significantly among current and former smokers or within categories of time since last exposure. The relative risk relationship between exposure to radon progeny and tobacco use was consistent with a multiplicative model, but the best-fitting model was intermediate between additive and multiplicative; an additive association was rejected. Adjustment for exposure to inorganic arsenic, a known lung carcinogen, reduced the estimate of the ERR/WLM from 0.86% to 0.28%. The ERR/WLM estimate was homogeneous across subgroups defined by workers not exposed to arsenic and quartiles of cumulative arsenic exposure. Although squamous cell carcinoma was the predominant cell type, small cell and adenocarcinoma histologies appeared more strongly associated with exposure to radon progeny. The finding of a stronger trend with exposure with small cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas, compared to squamous cell carcinomas, occurred primarily at younger ages at diagnosis. Finally, the risk of lung cancer was higher if exposure to radon progeny and tobacco use occurred together than if the exposure to radon progeny entirely preceded tobacco use.
The population of Linxian in China has one of the world's highest rates for esophageal/gastric cardia cancer, as well as documented nutritional deficiencies. To determine whether dietary supplementation with a multi-vitamin multi-mineral preparation could reduce the risk of esophageal cancer and favorably influence precursor lesions, 3,318 individuals age 40-69 with cytologically determined grade 1 or grade 2 esophageal dysplasia were randomly assigned to receive either an active multi-vitamin multi-mineral supplement or a placebo. Pills were distributed at monthly visits and incident cancers or deaths were recorded. At 30 and 72 months subsequent to randomization all living participants without a known incident cancer were asked to undergo repeat cytological examination of their esophagus. Based on these procedures participants were classified as having no dysplasia, dysplasia grade 1, dysplasia grade 2 or near cancer dysplasia. Diagnoses of cancer were based on the cytology findings plus available histologic, radiologic and clinical materials. At the end of the study there was little overall difference in cumulative risk of esophageal cancer between those receiving vitamin/mineral supplementation and those receiving placebo. There was, however, a significant increase in reversion to non-dysplastic cytology among the group receiving the active treatment. The odds of not having any dysplasia at the two post-randomization screens was 1.23 times higher in the active treatment group than in the placebo group. Within each treatment group higher categories of dysplasia were associated with higher rates of cancer.
A method to analyze and detect the features of rotor and stator asymmetric faults for AC motor is put forward in this paper. After modeling the damaged asynchronous motor, stator’s three-phase current signals of the motor at normal status, as well as that with stator and rotor bar asymmetric faults, are simulated and analyzed qualitatively. In view of the shortcomings of Park’s vector transformation in the analyzing motor current signature, a method is put forward by combining it with signal amplitude demodulation. Based on this new method, the asymmetric features are expected to be extracted completely through the amplitude relative normalization and spectrum analysis. Finally, the availability of this method is verified by detecting and diagnosing the faults in actual AC motors.
