As part of its commitment to improving dementia services, the Scottish Government has published six recommendations for developing care in emergency departments. This article looks at how each of these recommendations can be implemented by emergency nurses to make departments safer places for older people with confusion.
Not all hospital staff have had training in dementia care. This article describes how nurse managers in acute settings can prepare them to manage patients with dementia. It includes advice on identifying patients' diagnosis on admission, working with carers and encouraging activity, and emphasises the importance of establishing a rapport with patients.
