Purpose: This study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of sarcopenia and its associated factors in Koreans, who were 65 years of age or older. Methods: Data were from the Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The appendicular skeletal muscle mass was measured by a dual x-ray absorptiometry in 770 men and 1,000 women. We defined sarcopenia as appendicular skeletal muscle mass/weight*100(%) less than 2 standard deviations below the mean for gender specific young, healthy reference populations. Health and nutritional factors were compared in participants with and without sarcopenia. Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia was 6.6% for men and 9.4% for women. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that age, cancer, hypertension, and asthma were significantly associated with sarcopenia in men. However, in women, only one factor, current job, was significantly associated with sarcopenia. Conclusion: Sarcopenia was significantly associated with age, chronic disease, and current job in Korean elders. These results suggest that chronic disease and limited physical activity should be further investigated for their association with sarcopenia.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate mothers’ questions related to parenting young children in the internet community. Methods: One representative in the internet community was selected and parenting questions were collected over 2 weeks in October 2019. A total of 15,016 questions were analyzed by frequency and proportion after categorizing of 10 themes; health and daily care, connecting and communicating, play and learning, development and growth, poos and wees, sleep, feeding, solid foods, safety, behavior. Results: The most frequently asked questions per age ranged from 1 to 3 months (32.2%). The most frequently asked questions by theme per age were about feeding newborn up to 6 months, solid foods from 7 to 12 months, health and daily care from 13 to 24 months, and play and learning from 25 to 71 months. Conclusion: As these results reflect mother’s need for information and support, it is suggested that more specific and targeted online/offline support per age should be developed.
Purpose:The purpose of this study was to investigate factors associated with the intention to quit smoking in community-dwelling elderly smokers. Methods: From the database of the Fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES-IV), the researchers selected 448 elderly smokers over the age of 65. Data were analyzed with the x 2 test and multiple logistic regression using the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results: Of the respondents, 45.5% intended to quit. The factors associated with the intention to quit were relative youth, having limit of activity day living and having past attempts to quit. Conclusion: Population-based smoking cessation programs, especially those targeted at the elderly, should take these predictors into consideration in the design of interventions.
