Refractive index and density data of gaseous and liquid ethane, propane, n-butane, n-pentane, and liquid n-hexane were fitted to an empirical expression of the Lorentz–Lorenz function proposed by Eisenberg, Reisler, and Minton for application to liquids. This expression takes into account the dependency of the electronic polarizability ?e on density and temperature. This paper presents a way of applying this expression to liquids and gases to compute the density of hydrocarbons with an uncertainty Δρ/ρ?±0.1%.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
