The development of a system of quantitative and computer‐analyzed counting and scanning has been described with application to both metabolic nuclide studies as well as to diagnosis. The evolution of this quantitative method was from earlier and similar procedures developed for the description and analysis of radiation dose distribution. A variety of advantages associated with this approach have been enumerated and examples have been given for different body functions.
