Number of Metals and Minerals are described in Rasashastra (Iatrochemistry). Kousheyashma (Asbestos) is one such mineral drug listed under group of Sikata varga (Silicates). The details of this drug are not found in authoritative texts of Ayurveda. Recent books of Rasashastra have a brief description of this drug. Few formulations described in Ayurveda books of Malayalam contain this drug as one of ingredient. More details about pharmaceutical processing of this mineral drug is mentioned in literatures of Siddha system of Medicine. Kalnar, Kannaram, Hiravi, Sangaresha, Ratinara and Asbestos are the vernacular names of the drug Kousheyashma. A thorough electronic and print search was done related to formulations of Kousheyashma. It was found that there were 18 formulations of the study drug of varied dosage forms.
Yogaratnakara (1676 AD) is one among the most renowned literatures in Ayurveda. It's a compilation book from different classical texts available at that time period ranging from ancient period to later part of the 17 th century AD. One of the specialties of this book is compilation of single drug in different form specific to different disease conditions. To simplify the preparation and treatment author has focused on the use of ekala dravya in every chikitsa-prakarana. This work has been taken up to have a compilation of data of single drug in the given condition. The purpose of this study is to enlist the ekala dravya prayoga (single drug uses) mentioned for various conditions and diseases based on Yogaratnakara purvardha. Detail review of purvardha khanda of Yogaratnakara was carried out based on Hindi Commentary, Vidyotini teeka by Vaidya Sastri Laksmipati and edited by Sastri Brahmasankar, published by Chaukhamba publication. Single drug uses mentioned in chikitsa prakarana of each and every disease have been noted. Botanical identification and use of plant parts in some cases were referred from relevant books. Total 125 single drug uses have been noted from yogaratnakara purvardha.

This directly affects the quality and efficacy of the herbal products and the same has reflected in case of Uraria picta. Over usage, destructive harvesting and lack of cultivation have reduced the availability of Uraria picta. Inorder to characterize and compare the raw drugs used as prsniparni in market, the candidate species traded under the name Prsniparni were subjected to macroscopic and organoleptic evaluation, microscopic study, Physical and Phytochemical evaluation.
