Morphological and histological studies on reproductive system of insects have called the attention of several investigators (Snodgrass 1935, Bonhag 1958, Davey 1965, Wigglesworth 1965 Bryan (1954)
Factors such as salinity and temperature that control the distribution of fouling organisms are of considerable interest. Seasonal variations in salinity are of great importance in the distribution of such organisms because at some places the salinity may be sufficiently high for their survival only during certain months. It would appear that relatively few studies have been made to determine the effect of wide ranges of salinity. Beadle and Cragg (1940) carried out some experiments on the salinity tolerance of Gammarus and more extensive work was com-
In the crab Menippe rumphii, embedded in the connective tissue of tbe oesophagus there are salivary or oesophageal glands. Each gland is made up of four to eight conical cells with a central cavity. Histochemical observations on the gland cells have shown the presence of some neutral and weakly acidic sulfated mucopolysaccharides. The glands are positive to toluidine blue showing gamma metachromasia. Similar type of glands are also observed in the wails of the hindgut. The cytochemical details of the gland cells have been discussed in detail.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
