Abstract:The increased desire of patients to maintain their dentition has forced dental specialist to conserve the teeth in the mouth which are planned to be removed. In the light of this finding it is known that periodontally compromised teeth with severe bone loss at furcation area or endodontically compromised teeth may well be retained of their roots. This type of surgical therapy enables clinicians to better access the remaining tooth structure for periodontal and subsequent prosthetic therapy. In this case report palatal root resection of the right first maxillary molar with a simple procedure is presented along with a brief review of root resection as a treatment modality.
Aim: Light units used for polymerization of resin composites are subject to deterioration with age, and frequent maintenance is required to maintain optimal efficacy. The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of LED units in private dental offices in Baddi (H.P) for polymerization of resin composites. Materials and Methods: Twenty dental offices met all selection criteria and agreedto participate in the study. To measure light intensity, an analogue radiometer was used. The probe of each LED unit was placed and then measurements of light intensities were recorded for each light unit and the data was statistically analysed. Results: The light intensity of the individual units varied widely. The results revealed that there was error of 35% and a standard deviation of 155.76 among the intensities of various LED Units checked in the study. Conclusions: Light polymerization units in private dental offices displayed a wide rangein light intensity, and many had below-recommended levels. A positive linear relationship was found between light intensity and photoactivation effectiveness. Dentists should regularly monitor the condition of light units and replace deteriorating parts.
Introduction: Nickel, which is a potent allergen, is used as a key metallurgical ingredient for manufacturing orthodontic brackets. The study aims at extracting nickel levels in patient's saliva at different time interval. Methods: A total of twenty patients, ten bonded with conventional 3M Stainless steel brackets (group A) and another ten with nickel free brackets(group B). Group B was further divided into two groups of five each, based on different manufacturing companies viz Classic orthodontic and d-tech orthodontics. Three samples of stimulated saliva were collected from each patient at the following intervals: before placement of appliance, one hour after placement and a week after the appliance is being placed. The sample were then analysed with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer for amount of nickel release. Results: Study revealed that the nickel release in 3M stainless brackets in first hour of the bracket placement was very high compared to pre-treatment nickel level. Gradually the release was found to decrease when it was measured after one week. In the second group comprising nickel free brackets by Classic orthodontics the release of nickel gradually increased from the time the appliance was placed in the oral cavity over a period of one week. Third group having d-tech nickel free orthodontic brackets the release in nickel was found to be significantly on higher side after one hour of the appliance placement which eventually decreased over a period of one week. Conclusions: The final outcome of the present study revealed that manufacturing companies and extended time interval has a profound effect on nickel release from simulated fixed orthodontic appliance. Nickel free brackets used in the study though claim to be absolutely nickel free but some amount of nickel was found in them also.
Purpose: Prevention and management of postendodontic pain (PEP) is an integral part of endodontic treatment. NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen, Ketorolac are the most common medications used for managing pain after root canal treatment. So the purpose of this study was to compare the effect of pain relief on regular versus on demand prescription of ibuprofen after single-visit root canal treatment in teeth with irreversible pulpitis. Materials & Methodology: The study was performed on twenty patients. Root canal treatment was performed and all the patients were given a ‘‘rescue bag’’ that contained 8 tablets of 400 mg ibuprofen and then divided into two groups. In the group 1- patients were instructed to use ibuprofen tablets if they felt pain and in the group 2- patients were instructed to take ibuprofen regularly after every 6 hours for at least three days. Patients were instructed to complete a form to rate their pain at 24 and 48 hours after the root canal treatment and were also asked to record the number of analgesic tablets they had taken. Records were collected and statistically analysed. Results: The patients’ pain levels in groups 1 and 2 were not significantly different at 24 and 48 hours after root canal treatment. The number of analgesic medications used by the patients in group 2 was significantly higher than the other group. Conclusion: Regular prescription of ibuprofen had no significant effect on postoperative pain compared with on-demand use of ibuprofen in teeth with irreversible pulpitis
Dental avulsion is characterized by the complete displacement of the tooth from its socket, with damage to the periodontal ligament, cementum, alveolar bone, gingival and pulp tissues. The ideal treatment for an avulsed permanent tooth is its immediate replantation into the socket. However, in spite of itsrecognized therapeutic value, clinical experience has shown that immediatereplantation rarely occurs due to factors associated to the accident itself, complex damage to the recipient site, or simply lack of knowledgeor confidence of the general population and even professionals about Replantation procedures. The present study was carried out with an aim to assess the level of knowledge of emergency management of avulsed teeth among 209 Dental practitioners in the state of Punjab. The received questionnaires were analysed for the responses. The data showed that the knowledge of dental practitioners in the state was not up to date and efforts should be made to carry out various education programs for the same.
