We designed and administered rating and ranking instruments to examine the perceptions about teaching characteristics held by administrators, academic department chairpersons responsible for evaluating teaching, instructional faculty, and deaf college students. The differences in perceptions found between supervisors and teachers about characteristics of effective teaching indicate a need for ongoing dialogue. In addition, teachers and deaf college students were found to differ in their views of the importance of certain characteristics, and we suggest teachers discuss these perceptions with students. We also recommend additional research on particular characteristics of effective teaching.

Drawing on sociocultural theories of learning, this case study describes how a small liberal arts university, steeped in a tradition of innovation and discovery, developed and introduced an interdisciplinary academic and applied esports program. The study describes the importance of a multi-interdisciplinary approach to program development and building community, drawn from the voices and expertise of interdepartmental stakeholders including administration, faculty, staff, and students. The authors share the timeline of events and lessons learned in launching a successful esports program by applying an entrepreneurial mindset and accepting an appropriate level of risk.

General characteristics of effective faculty development programs for postsecondary educators in institutions serving deaf students are discussed. The authors review the literature in search of successful strategies for meeting the guidelines for faculty development recommended by the Conference of Educational Administrators Serving the Deaf in 1973 for establishing and operating postsecondary programs for deaf students. Effective approaches used at the authors' institution, including mentoring, consultation, networking and workshops, are presented.
