Denny Grant and Karl Brooks provide a welcome analysis of the additional factors compounding the problem of exclusion for Black pupils. Their detailed description of Enfield Education Authority's approach to this problem focuses on the development and implementation of policy, through ethnic monitoring and the publication of school exclusion data. Preventative measures such as mentoring and mediation are also described. Enfield can now report a reduction in the overall exclusion rate. Grant and Brooks conclude that the initiatives they describe, coupled with commitment and the setting of very specific targets, can maintain this trend and bring about further reductions.
