Abstract. Paraplegia does not seriously impair marital functioning according to a critical review of the English-language literature from the last three decades on the marital impact of adult-onset paraplegia. The review focuses on what is currently known about three aspects of marital functioning in paraplegics: marital stability, sexual interaction and marital satisfaction. The discussion highlights implications for health care personnel who advise or counsel paraplegic patients or their spouses about marital concerns.
