Devices made from gallium arsenide (GaAs) have been grown on silicon for the first time following a breakthrough at Motorola Labs in the US. Following successful trials by the wafer manufacturer IQE at Cardiff in the UK, scientists at Motorola are optimistic that the advance could lead to cheaper and faster optical communications and microelectronics.
An indigenous, specifically Māori worldview is used as the foundation for a case study that describes the people and their relationships and interactions in one New Zealand primary school (ages 5-11). We contextualize this school and its people, within the education and schooling system since the introduction of a new leadership team in 2011. We consider how leaders, teachers, and whānau (family and extended family) have promoted contexts for learning to ensure Māori students can enjoy and achieve education success as Māori (Ministry of Education 2013). Leaders' and teachers' beliefs, and their principles for practice, are detailed alongside the changes in Māori students' experiences. Finally, we consider these principles for practice in terms of their relevance for other indigenous and nonindigenous students. The case concludes in 2017 when, for the second successive year, the school became a finalist in the New Zealand, Prime Minister's Excellence Awards in Education for teaching and learning.
A new type of "regenerative" fuel cell could revolutionize the energy industry by making electricity as easy to store as oil. Most fuel cells generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, with water as the only by-product, whereas the regenerative fuel cell stores energy in tanks of salt solution. Work on this kind of fuel cell is being earned out by Innogy, which is currently part of National Power in die UK but is due to be demerged soon.By allowing electricity to be stockpiled, Innogy's Regenesys system will let smallscale generators compete with large centralized plants. "We like to think of this as an electricity warehouse rather than a giantrechargeable batter)'," said David Trelfall, director of the project. 'Just like a warehouse it will allow generators to put electricity in when the prices are cheap and to sell it again when the prices are high."Regenesys uses sodium bromide and sodium polysulphide salts, which are abundant and safe. A reversible elecoochemical reaction stores energy in the salts, which are separated by a proton exchange membrane. The electrodes play no part in the reaction, unlike a batter)', where the size and shape of the electrodes limit the performance.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
