Over 400 million metric tons of plastic waste are generated globally each year, resulting in pollution and lost resources. Recycling strategies can recapture this wasted material, but there is a lack of quantitative and transparent data on the capabilities and impacts of these processes. Here, we develop a data set of material quality, material retention, circularity, contamination tolerance, minimum selling price, greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, land use, toxicity, waste generation, and water use metrics for closed-loop polymer recycling technologies, including mechanical recycling and solvent-based dissolution of polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polypropylene, as well as enzymatic hydrolysis, glycolysis, and vapor methanolysis of PET. Mechanical recycling and PET glycolysis display the best economic (9%−73% lower than competing technologies) and environmental (7%−88% lower) performances, while dissolution, enzymatic hydrolysis, and methanolysis provide the best recyclate material qualities (2%−27% higher). We identify electricity, steam, and organic solvents as top process contributors to these metrics and apply sensitivity and multicriteria decision analyses to highlight key future research areas. The estimates derived in this work provide a quantitative baseline for comparing and improving recycling technologies, can help reclaimers identify optimal end-of-life routes for given waste streams, and serve as a framework for assessing future innovations.

The unprecedented growth and socioeconomic impacts of polyolefins clearly outline a major success story in the world of polymer science. Polyolefins revolutionizes industries such as health care, construction, and food packaging. Despite the benefits of polyolefins, there is a rising concern for the environment due to high production volume (i.e., fossil fuel consumption), often short usage time, and problems related to waste management and accumulation in the natural environment. Creating a circular economy for polyolefins through effective recycling technologies has the potential to decrease the environmental impact of these materials. This perspective discusses polyolefins and their impact, existing and emerging recycling/upcycling solutions, and recycle‐by‐design alternatives that are challenging the status quo.

Epoxy‐amine thermoset polymers exhibit a complicated, highly crosslinked network structure. The connectivity of this network drives material parameters such as mechanical properties and solvent permeation. Understanding the molecular network architecture is also an important aspect of the developing realistic network topologies for use in molecular dynamic simulations. Here, the evolution of network connectivity in a typical crosslinked epoxy‐amine network (Epon 828/3‐aminophenyl sulfone) is monitored as a function of cure time. Special attention is paid to nanoscale variation in the crosslink density of the network. Submicron atomic force microscope images of sample fracture surfaces revealed three distinct types of crack tip propagation. Near‐infrared spectroscopy, rheological and thermal characterization were used to correlate each type of fracture propagation behavior to a different stage of network development. Monitoring changes in the nanoscale fracture behavior reveals information regarding changes in the network architecture during cure and provides insight into the final structure of the epoxy‐amine network. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) additives have been shown to increase melt-flow and crystallization in thermoplastics. In this study, the effect of incorporation of trisilanolphenyl-POSS molecules in polyphenylenesulfide (PPS) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) on rheology, crystallization kinetics, and thermal and mechanical properties was evaluated. Parallel plate rheometry revealed a reduction in the viscosity of PPS and PEEK with the addition of POSS. The magnitude and concentration dependence of rheological modification were shown to depend on the polymer structure and POSS solubility. Isothermal crystallization kinetics were analyzed using the Avrami model and it was found that the addition of POSS accelerated the crystallization rate of PPS blends with no significant effect on PEEK blends. Interestingly, no statistical difference in degradation temperature, tensile modulus, or tensile strength of PPS or PEEK blends was observed. The findings indicate the potential for improvements in melt viscosity and crystallization of high temperature thermoplastics with tailored POSS/polymer interactions. V C 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
