Creative pattern cutting really pushes the boundaries of design. It is a luxury that breaks all traditional rules. The whole process however is costly, in both the use of cloth and the time it takes to produce a pattern. This paper examines creative cutting from final year fashion students. It celebrates the student's individual philosophies towards creative cut and examines how the industry promotes pattern cutting to students as a viable career option. The role of the pattern cutter can have as much glamorous allure as the role of the designer although it is at a lower key. Its allure comes from creative satisfaction and integrity. The paper also discusses the realistic and commercial cost implications in the production of creatively cut garments and suggests pragmatic ways to maintain this luxurious creativity with cost effectiveness.Word Count (including title page and references) 5465.
The aim of the research is to explore how the discipline of pattern cutting can be taught, investigated and practiced through innovative, interdisciplinary approaches. Interdisciplinarity involves the combining of two or more academic disciplines into one activity (for instance in this enquiry, pattern cutting is merged with disciplines such as health and engineering). The study discusses how interdiscipinarity can break rules, which involve going against a set of regulations that direct a practice or method within an area of activity. This mutinous concept can make pattern cutting appear more exciting and creative to the student and often leads to them exploring different concepts and approaches. The research was based on secondary sources gathered from a review of papers presented at, The Second International Conference for Creative Pattern Cutting, held at University of Huddersfield, 24 and 25 February 2016. This conference was purposively selected due to its discipline relevance and international representation and was unique to the authors because they organised and chaired the event. To date, this has been the sole global platform to disseminate research in pattern cutting and the approach is described as a methodology of conference organisation, using content analysis as well as interviews with the individual authors of selected papers. It focuses on works that considered new ways to pattern cut by effectively implementing interdisciplinary activity into its practice. The findings discuss how the disorderly methods impacted on the student's experiences. Ultimately this supports the development of original, novel and innovative, pedagogical approaches to pattern cutting practice and has the potential to enrich the fashion industry, encouraging pattern cutters to develop essential skills to cross discipline boundaries.
This article investigates the voluptuous female silhouette in fashion. Is it a super imposed image of a desired female form or simply a way of accentuating the ample assets of a larger sized body? Body image has been identified as crucial to clothing provision and fashion consumption 1 Research has recognized that fuller-sized and obese people were considered unhappy, unconfident, unattractive and identified a huge level of discrimination and negativity towards the overweight (Blumberg and Mellis 1985, Clayson and Klassen 1989, Miller 1990, Salusso-Dounier 1993. Presenting and describing a body as voluptuous could be a more palatable way to repackage and reconceptualise the larger sized. It is perhaps a more flattering description shrouding prejudices with regards to fashion, style and garment selection. The investigation includes a number of approaches. Object based research investigates the design and manufacture of garments for the fuller sized figure. Action based research in the design studio considers fashion designer's attitudes towards the plus-sized and its effects on production and consumption. Semi structured interviews and case studies support the qualitative approaches taken and identify the fashion choices available for voluptuous bodies and if these clothes involve levels of body modification. They also suggest how the repackaged voluptuous body could continue to be represented in a future global market place.
