Comrade A. L Tikhomirov, director of the Department of Water Management of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Uzhekistan, greeted the conference participants at the plenary meeting. S. M. Mamarasulov, Minister of Reclamation and Water Management of the Uzbek SSIL reported on problems of irrigation in the basin of the Ainu Dar'ya River and the tasks facing water-management organizations of the republic. The reports of F. N. Nadzhimov, director of SANIIRI, and of A. M. Mukhamedov, Corresponding Member of the All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences, were devoted, respectively, to problems of the organization of research and development in connection with irrigation of the basin of the Amu Dar'ya River and to the main directions of investigations of the river-bed processes. NL F. Skladnev, chairman of the SNC IAHtL reported on the main directions of the activities of the IAHR and its Soviet National Committee.A special feature was the joint discussion of problems of water intakes from rivers and river-bed processes at intake structures. In two sections of the conference, 83 persons from 37 organizations presented reports.The state of investigations, planning of construction, and operation of intake headings, full-scale and laboratory investigations of main canals, protection of fish at intake structures, calculations of the winter regime of canals and impounding reservoirs, and other problems were discussed at the section for intake structures (section chairman Professor N. F. Daneliya).Problems of reworldng of channels in the pools of hydro developments, river realignment over long distances and near intake headings, results of full-scale and laboratory investigations for controlling the destruction of the banks of the Amu Dar'ya, studies of the hydraulic and kinematic parameters of the flow in the bank-collapse zone, problems of modeling river-bed processes, and equipment and method of experimental investigations were discussed at the section for river-bed processes (section chairman Professor G. V. Zheleznyakov).
