Communication influences patient disclosure, treatment adherence, and outcome, adaptation to illness, and bereavement. Different cancer patients and caregivers communicate their various experiences in unique ways. These distinctive experiences are necessary to be told, because it empowers both the teller and everyone who hears and shares that experience. However, there is little research documenting the experiences of cervical cancer patients and caregivers in Kenya and the rest of Africa. This study therefore sought to assess the communication experience among cervical cancer patients and their caregivers. This study was a qualitative study employing the phenomenological method to obtain data from cervical patients and caregivers. It was carried out in Uasin Gishu County, Kenya, where a range of in-depth interviews were held with eight patients and eight caregivers purposively sampled. Data from the interviews were analysed thematically and presented in narrative form using paraphrases and quotations. Ethical issues such as informed consent, confidentiality and official authorisation were observed at all levels. To enrich this study, hermeneutic theory, which explains more about the individual's experience, was used. The findings of the study indicated that communication is therapeutic, although most of the patients and the caregivers were reluctant to talk about their illness. The findings of this study will be of interest to scholars, policy-makers and caregivers of terminally ill patients.
Purpose The study aims to establish the records management practice, in support of governance in Nyamira County. The objectives were to determine the types of records managed in Nyamira County, to establish the contribution of records management in the running of Nyamira County, to determine the adoption of records management policies in Nyamira County and to assess strategies that will lead to sound records management in Nyamira County. Design/methodology/approach The sample population comprised 27 respondents who were drawn from different categories of staff through census sampling as follows: 4 records officers, 3 record clerks, 10 chief officers and 10 secretaries. The study used a qualitative research approach where interview schedules and observation were used for data collection. Findings It was established that Nyamira County generated various types of records including policy related records, financial records and auditing records. It was submitted that records management is essential in support of governance as it forms a basis for equity in resource distribution, hence fostering confidence among the public, which results in good will from the people on County government projects. The study noted various challenges including inadequately trained staff on records management, lack of records disposal and retention schedules, inadequate equipment and space and inadequate policies and standards. Originality/value The study concluded that poor records management practiced in Nyamira County was a great hindrance to good governance and recommended that county governments should formulate and implement records management policies, standards and guidelines and provide adequate budgetary allocations to ensure that the records management practice that is in place supports governance.
As one of the components of corporate communication, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is gaining currency in both for-profit as well as not-for-profit organizations the world over as ISSN 2327-5510 2016 http://ijssr.macrothink.org 116 it enhances good corporate management and sustainable development. Although many corporations in Kenya are engaged in CSR activities, Equity Bank has tended to employ a more transformative approach. Majority of those who are targeted to benefit from the bank's CSR programmes comprise the youth. However, there is very little known about the extent to which the public, including the youth, is aware of these programmes, particularly in Kisii Central sub-county of Kisii county, Kenya. Thus the study sought to fill this gap. The descriptive survey research design was used. The study population comprised 897 youths in the sub-county who had benefitted from the bank's CSR programmes. Simple random sampling was used to select 180 of them to participate in the study. Additionally, five (5) respondents who were knowledgeable on the bank's CSR programmes concerning youth empowerment were purposively involved as well. An interview guide and questionnaire were used to gather information to be analyzed. Descriptive statistics including frequencies, percentages and graphs were used to present the data. The study revealed that the level of awareness among youths of the bank's range of CSR programmes was low. The study recommends that the youth be sensitized on all the bank's CSR programmes. Apart from laying ground for further research, the findings are of great benefit to the concerned policy makers, academicians and other stakeholders. International Journal of Social Science Research
Managing a serious diagnosis is a complex and challenging process thus effective communication is a critical aspect of cancer management. However, this has not been given the much needed emphasis. This study therefore sought to examine the influence of communication on cancer management. It adopted an interpretivist research paradigm which is a qualitative approach. Ethical issues such as informed consent, confidentiality and official authorization were observed at all levels. The findings of the study indicated that the patients and caregiver downplayed their feelings so as to protect themselves and their loved ones. Social cultural factors and stigma also contributed to their silence. It is concluded that silence is draining and patients and caregivers need to be encouraged by medical practitioners, family and the support groups to share their feelings. Based on the findings of this study, it is necessary for the patients and caregivers to have a platform where they will be able to share their experience.
