Thymic tumors represent 0.2-1.5 % of all malignancies with an incidence of 0.15 per 100,000 population. Thymic tumors are most common tumors of the anterior mediastinum accounting for 20 % of all mediastinal tumors and 50 % of all anterior mediastinal tumors. Over 90 % of all thymic tumors occur in anterior mediastinum, remainder occurring in neck or other mediastinal areas especially aortopulmonary window and retro cardiac area which are common sites for ectopic thymic tissues and possible explanation for failure in some cases of simple thymectomy to improve Myasthenia Gravis(MG). The aim of this review is to discuss histologic classification, diagnostic features, evaluation, management and prognosis of thymic tumors.
HighlightsLacrimal gland adenoid cystic carcinoma present with late metastases.Surgery of the primary is the only proven mode of treatment with radiotherapy used in selected cases.Disseminated metastases can be managed successfully with staged procedures depending on the general condition of the patient. This is the first report describing such staged surgical treatment for widespread hepatic and pulmonary metastases with a good outcome.
Follicular dendritic cell tumor (FDCT) are extremely rare difficult to diagnose category tumors. There has been a considerable controversy in medical community regarding precise classification and optimal management of this tumor with some treating it as a form of non Hodgkins lymphoma and some as soft tissue sarcomas. The number of published cases are still low and documentation too heterogenous to give statistically ified therapeutic recommendation of these tumors. This case report aims to highlight various aspects of diagnosing and treating this rare entity.
The aim of this article is to review randomized and non-randomized trials and meta-analysis comparing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) plus surgery versus surgery alone in resectable esophageal cancers. The article examines the value of NAC as a standard of care in the era of multimodality treatment with availability of different therapeutic options. The emphasis is on assessment of benefit of NAC in terms of survival (long and short term) rate of RO resection in resectable esophageal cancers of any histopathologic type. The in-hospital post-operative morbidity and mortality in NAC group, chemotherapeutic drug regimens and their response rates and optimal number of cycles to be used will also be addressed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
