This article proceeds from the conviction that the crux of the sport-environment conflict concerns limitations of growth. Without insisting on the obviously positive functions of sports, the extent of unintentional damage that sports have caused through their differentiation as a partial social system is examined, as well as the possibilities for control of such self-induced complexity.
