Serious mental illness (SMI) is a chronic, often life-limiting illness that is inherently accompanied by significant psychosocial and spiritual distress. Since SMI is prevalent, it is not uncommon that individuals are concurrently diagnosed with other life-limiting illnesses, for example, cancer. This specialty population presents with unique needs, challenges, and difficulties when trying to navigate the healthcare system. By reviewing SMI diagnoses and treatments, this chapter aims to educate the palliative advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) to better serve patients with both SMI and other palliative diagnoses. The content includes introductions to trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and palliative psychiatry.
