The spatial resolution in positron emission tomography (PET) is fundamentally limited by the geometry of the detector element, the positron's recombination range with electrons, the acollinearity of the positron, the crystal decoding error, the penetration into the detector ring, and the reconstruction algorithms. In this paper, optimized parameters are suggested to produce high-resolution PET images by using an iterative reconstruction algorithm. A phantom with three point sources structured with three capillary tubes was prepared with an axial extension of less than 1 mm and was filled with 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose ( 18 F-FDG) with concentrations above 200 MBq/cc. The performance measures of all the PET images were acquired according to the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) NU 2-2007 standards procedures. The parameters for the iterative reconstruction were adjusted around the values recommended by General Electric GE, and the optimized values of the spatial resolution and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) or the full width at tenth of maximum (FWTM) values were found for the best PET resolution. The axial and the transverse spatial resolutions, according to the filtered back-projection (FBP) at 1 cm off-axis, were 4.81 and 4.48 mm, respectively. The axial and the transaxial spatial resolutions at 10 cm off-axis were 5.63 mm and 5.08 mm, respectively, and the trans-axial resolution at 10 cm was evaluated as the average of the radial and the tangential measurements. The recommended optimized parameters of the spatial resolution according to the NEMA phantom for the number of subsets, the number of iterations, and the Gaussian post-filter are 12, 3, and 3 mm for the iterative reconstruction VUE Point HD without the SharpIR algorithm (HD), and 12, 12, and 5.2 mm with SharpIR (HD.S), respectively, according to the Advantage Workstation Volume Share 5 (AW4.6). The performance measurements for the GE Discovery PET/CT 710 using the NEMA NU 2-2007 standards from our results will be helpful in the quantitative analysis of PET scanner images. The spatial resolution was modified more by using an improved algorithm such as HD.S, than by using HD and FBP. The use of the optimized parameters for iterative reconstructions is strongly recommended for qualitative images from the GE Discovery PET/CT 710 scanner.
Treatment techniques that affect homeostasis by non-invasive regulation in peripheral organs will advance disease research. Here, we demonstrate a non-invasive method of conditioning within an organ using a low-frequency stimulator superposition of alternating microcurrent wave in stages. It is first applied to the inflammatory response in H3N2-infected sinusitis mice. To check the progress of the treatment, mice were sacrificed every week for 3 weeks, nasal tissue was removed, and the inflammatory response was investigated through H & E staining. The low-frequency stimulation treatment group was found to alleviate the proliferation of epithelial cells and invasion of inflammatory cells compared to the control group as the passage of treatment time. The reduction of inflammatory cytokines in the nasal lavage fluid was observed in H3N2-infected sinusitis mice treated with of low-frequency stimulation using superposition of alternating microcurrent wave compared to H3N2-infected sinusitis mice after 3 weeks. These data demonstrate that low-frequency stimulation device in the form of using alternating current wave superposition on within organs provides a new method to regulate specific physiological functions. Therefore, it is necessary to prove the inhibitory effect of low-frequency stimulation using alternating current wave superposition on inflammatory diseases by various methods through further studies and clinical studies.
Neuropathic pain is generally characterized by sensory abnormalities such as sensory disorders, hyperalgesia, and allodynia. Recent studies have reported that TRPV1 activation is essential for establishing of inflammation in the neuropathy pain models, showing that the expression of this receptor is increased, and contributing to enhanced thermal sensitivity. Nypa fruticans Wurmb (NF), which was used as a folk remedy, is a plant that is gaining attention due to its various effects. In this study, we investigated the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of NFE (Nypa fruticans Wurmb extracts) by controlling the neurological function of TRPV1. In sciatic crush injury rat models, a significant level of antinociceptive effect was observed in the thermal hyperalgesia test in which NF extracts (NFE 500 mg/kg) were orally administered, daily. Protein quantification of the sciatic nerve and the of the L4–L6 spinal cord showed a decrease of the TRPV1 expression, the inflammatory expression factor, COX2, and proinflammatory factors in the NFE treated groups. Our results indicate that NFE affects antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory by controlling TRPV1 in sciatic neuropathic pain models.
Sex (i.e., female sex) confers one point for the CHA2DS2-VASc score. For this reason, females with atrial fibrillation (AF) always have a CHA2DS2-VASc score of at least 1. To compare the CHA2DS2-VA (excluding female sex) and CHA2DS2-VASc scores in Korean AF patients using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, we analyzed the risk of ischemic stroke in nonvalvular AF patients between 2013 and 2017. The predictive values of the CHA2DS2-VA and CHA2DS2-VASc scores for ischemic stroke were evaluated using the C-statistic and net reclassification improvement (NRI). The primary outcome was the occurrence of ischemic stroke. A total of 185,637 patients with AF (49.7% women) were included in this study. The mean ages were 66.5 years for females and 64.9 years for males. The incidence of ischemic stroke in male patients was similar to females (3.63%/year vs. 3.72%/year, p = 0.273, respectively). In addition, no sex difference was apparent for stroke risk in AF patients stratified by risk factor component and age group. In the C-statistic analysis, the predictive ability of the CHA2DS2-VA score for ischemic stroke was similar to the CHA2DS2-VASc score. Additionally, CHA2DS2-VA performed better for predicting ischemic stroke in AF patients with risk scores of ≥2 (AUC 0.701 vs. 0.689, z = 4.596, p < 0.001) or those aged ≥75 years (AUC 0.715 vs. 0.701, z = 4.957, p < 0.001). In Korean AF patients, female sex is not a specific risk factor that contributes to the development of ischemic stroke. The CHA2DS2-VA score, which excludes female sex, may be a more suitable risk score for guiding anticoagulation decisions in Korean AF patients.
